Take a Day Trip Cherry Picking
School holidays and the Christmas break are fast approaching and it’s time to plan those relaxing day trips to keep you entertained. This is where Cherry picking becomes the perfect holiday activity. Plus, cherries are the perfect festive fruit, and can be added to any menu from fruit platters to Christmas desserts.
Even better, these delicious morsels of red fruit are currently in season and ready for you to pick.
We recently visited Chappies U-pick farm, located in Silvan (a 1 hour drive from Melbourne), and boy-o-boy did we pick to our hearts content. Chappies U-Pick farm is run by Mark and Steve Chapman, a brother duo whom are 4th generation Victorian fruit growers. Located on 50 hectares of land, Chappies allow you to roam their orchards and pick the delicious fruit, catering to every taste bud from super sweet to sour cherries.
Not only can you stock up on these amazing Australian and Victorian grown fruit, it is an amazing field trip to do with both friends and family. The farm is children friendly and encourages kids to pick their own cherries, teaching them the essential qualities of farm to plate, and balanced eating.
Even better, you can pick and eat at the same time- no suppressing those urges to gobble as you go at this farm!
Cherries can be purchased at $10 a kilo, as well as an assorted range of raspberries and blackberries at the same price. Not only are these prices FAR below supermarket prices, but picking straight from the farm supports local farmers and keeps the Australian and Victorian cherry industries churning. Support local farmers we say, and plus you’ll have bucket loads of fresh cherries to eat!
