Barre Pilates, The New Workout
Barre pilates is a new fitness wave taking the world by storm. Fusing elements of pilates, ballet and dance movement to create full body workouts. We recently interviewed Stephanie Canning, owner of Xtend Barre Essendon, to talk about Xtend Barre, and discuss all the things you need to know.
What is xtend barre and what does a class involve?
Xtend Barre is a fusion of Pilates, ballet & dance to create an adrenaline-fueled workout that strengthens, and lengthens the body. Each class features an elegant combination of movements that enhance flexibility, improve balance, and challenge the core. These classes are for everyone; we start classes with all base moves and offer optional advancements for those who want an extra challenge!
How did your xtend barre journey begin?
I studied human nutrition, so I have always had a keen interest in health and fitness.
I was a ‘gym junkie’ but found I never achieved the type of body I wanted and always looked bulky and stocky rather than long and lean. After 2 years as a client at Xtend Barre, I became an instructor and then took the plunge to open my own studio in Essendon. Pilates was always a favourite of mine so barre seemed like a natural progression.
What are the benefits of Xtend Barre?
It will help you achieve reduced back and neck pain from improved posture and core strength; improved co-ordination and balance through dance moves; and leaner muscles as small controlled moves focus on recruiting smaller muscles that help pull everything in and give you definition without bulk. Xtend barre workouts are also low impact so you don’t put stress on joints and is a safe workout for all bodies, even pregnant women.
You recently had a baby how did barre help the journey?
I was able to participate in classes right up until my due date modifying the abdominal section and taking moves at a slower pace.I listened to my body and if there were a day where I didn’t feel up to exercising I would take it easy and go for a walk. Growing a tiny human is exhausting so its key to listen to your body. I found that exercising kept my energy levels up & helped me sleep better, and bounce back post pregnancy. We recommend always consulting your doctor if you have any concerns about your pregnancy and if you consider Xtend Barre during pregnancy or post natal speak to your instructor so that we are across any modifications we need to make for you.
